Build your hair care routine for Curls & Coils with SheaMoisture!
Starting a hair care routine or figuring out which products to use can be quite daunting when you have curly or coily hair. Especially as this hair type consists of different curl patterns, needs consistent care and is very picky when it comes to the type of products it likes. That’s why we have a broad range catered to curly and coily hair and even created a hair chart that shows exactly which range is best suited for your curl pattern. Easy right?
So, now you know which range is best suited for your hair, follow the below 4 steps to build your routine. Let’s get started!
Step 1: Cleansing
If you have curly or coily hair, it will probably not need frequent washing due to the dry nature of your hair. Some cleanse their hair every week as they get build up quicker, whereas others do it every other week. It really depends on your hair and a general rule of thumb: when you notice a greasy scalp and your curls look less defined & moisturized? Then it’s probably time for a cleanse!
When cleansing focus on removing build up from your scalp and dividing it into sections to prevent tangles. All our shampoos are sulphate free clarifying shampoos that gently but effectively remove buildup without drying out the hair.
Alternatively, if you don’t like shampoo as much or notice your hair is very dry and isn’t ready for a shampoo cleanse, then you can co-wash instead. This is simply using a conditioner to refresh & cleanse your scalp in between wash days. You can use any of our conditioners for this.
Step 2: Conditioning
This step most often comes after cleansing, to rehydrate and create the slip needed to detangle your hair. If you notice your hair isn’t as tangled or if you know you will also use a deep conditioner, then you can also skip this and move straight to step 3.
Some also prefer to first go in with a conditioner when they notice they have a lot of knots to detangle and afterwards cleanse with shampoo. Completely up to you what your hair needs.
Step 3: Deep conditioning
A key step in your hair routine. Deep conditioning can be done with any of our masks. When you have curly or coily hair, there are often 2 main reasons to deep condition:
A protein-based conditioner to prevent breakage or rebalance strength of the hair
A moisture-based conditioner to infuse hydration into the hair
The frequency of applying a deep conditioner really depends on your hair needs, but most deep condition weekly or bi-weekly. Have a look at our collection to find the mask that fits best with your needs.
Step 4: Styling
The last step is all about providing lasting moisture, locking this in and ensuring further dryness is prevented until the next wash day. You can use our smoothies, creams, styling milks, leave-ins and mousses for this. Depending on your desired finish you can decide which products or combination of products fit best with your end goal.
Rehydrating or refreshing your hair often happens in between wash day too, most likely when your hair is not quite ready for a cleanse yet but does need some extra moisture. For some, their hair lasts until the next wash day, but others prefer to reapply styling products around 2-3 days after their wash. Don’t forget to rewet first before applying products!
It may be a process in the beginning to figure out what does and doesn’t work for your hair, but once you do, it will get easier we promise!
So, to get started – look at our hair chartto understand which range works best for your hair type, follow these steps and we can’t wait to see your hair shine!
