As the weather descends into winter chills, your hair can undergo a mass of changes – from the way it looks to the hair care process you follow. The colder weather may make your hair dry and dull, but beating the frizz can be easy. Follow our hair care tips on how to maintain luscious locks all year round.
Tip 1 - Conditioning is key
Just because it’s cold, doesn’t mean the sun isn’t there to dry your hair out. In fact, in the colder months not only does the sun dry your hair, but a combination of the wind and dry heat indoors can deplete your hair of moisture. This makes it more brittle, dry and prone to breakage. Conditioning is therefore vital.
Treat your hair to a deep condition or hair mask once a week to restore lost moisture and shine. Those that are rich in oils will promise softer, silkier hair. Not only will your hair look and feel better but it will be easier to style and manage.
Tip 2 -Accessorize
One of the easiest ways to beat the chaos cold weather can have on your hair is to cover up. Just as you would wear gloves to prevent your hands drying up, wear a hat on you head.
Protect your hair from the harsh winds and retain its moisture through a woolly accessory. This will act as a barrier to the conditions outside and prevent it from drying up and breaking.
TIP: to prevent the dreaded hat hair, wrap a silk scarf around your hair before putting on your hat. This will prevent your hair from looking flat and static. Alternatively, pre-style your hair with volume enhancing products to counteract the dreaded flat hat hair.
Tip 3 - Dry Shampoo
Keep hair washing to a minimum when the weather outside is colder. Washing your hair in hot water will dry it out, sapping the already scarce moisture from it. Wash your hair no more than 2 times a week in luke-warm water to prevent it from drying.
For the in-between days, dry shampoo is the perfect solution. It will soak up the excess oils from your hair without stripping it of its natural oils, keeping it conditioned yet grease-free.
Tip 4 - Stay Away from Heat
Heat dries your hair out, but it can be especially damaging when using it on hair that is already suffering from the cold conditions. As your hair is already vulnerable to dryness in the cold months, try to not worsen it.
Avoid using heat as this can cause split ends which weaken your hair and make it less tolerant to harsh winds. Towel-dry your hair the best you can, using a serum to condition it. If you do insist on using heat on your hair then be sure to use a strong heat protector. This will be your winter saviour.
Follow these tips and usual hair maintenance such as regular trims to ensure you beat the battle your hair has with the colder weather.
