Love changing up your look on the fly? Never shy away from making a statement? One of the easiest (and dare we say, most instantly satisfying!) ways of shaking up your look is by transforming your locks. Whether you want to try a shade that’s a million miles away from your original colour or simply want to enhance and intensify your natural tresses, you can get selfie-ready results straight out of the box with L’Oréal Paris Preference Vivids. Here’s how…
How to bleach your hair at home
OK, so you tried DIY boxes before but didn’t get the bold colour you were promised, right? More often than not, it’s because you need to lighten your base colour before going in with your Pinterest-perfect colour. It’s not impossible to go from dark brown and black hair to platinum blonde, with box colour, but you might want to help the colour on its merry way by bleaching.
Step One: Prep like a pro
Just because you’re doing it solo, in the comfort of your bathroom (and in an old baggy tee, no doubt) doesn’t mean you have cut corners. Grabbing yourself some sectioning clips and a brush will make this experience 10x easier and more enjoyable.
Step two: Mix it up & apply
Using a bleaching kit – we love using Preference Ultra Platinum Bleach as it can lift hair colour up to 9 shades lighter – prep your colour according to the box instructions. Section hair into quadrants and apply about an inch away from your scalp all the way to the ends (if needed). Once you’ve covered everything, fill in your roots. Hair colour develops quicker at the roots, so best left to the end if you want an even finish.
Let the formula work its magic (usually between 30 mins-45mins development time). Then give it a good rinse and wash with a nourishing shampoo. With the L’Oréal Paris’ Preference range, you’ll get a much-needed brass-defying conditioner too to give your newly-dyed hair a bit of TLC.
Step four: Next colour
Now your hair is lighter; you can repeat the process with a bold, bright or light hue (like vibrant red or trending rose gold).
Spotlight on: L’Oréal Paris Preference Vivids

So, if you’re looking for a significant change, this collection (previously known as Colorista) offers up 12 radiant shades that dial up the drama and shine. How? With clever formulas made by colourist experts, featuring Liquid Gel technology for added luminosity and a kind-to-hair Shine Protect conditioner that keeps brassiness at bay.
