Steps to Achieve a Braided Updo on Black Natural Hair

Step 1: Condition your hair

Black natural hair is prone to drying out, this is why it’s important to keep it moisturised. Condition your hair with a moisturising spray or your favourite conditioner. Start with your ends as these are most likely to be the driest and continue your way towards the roots. Massage the product in until it is no longer visible.

Step 2: Comb your hair

Gently comb through your hair upwards using a wide-toothed comb. If it is easier for you, work in sections. Make sure your locks are knot and tangle-free.

Step 3: Part your hair for front the braid

Take your tail comb and make a parting on both sides of your head using your brow arch as a guide. When you are happy with both partings, connect them with a third one. We will use the hair in this section to create our braid.

Step 4: Braid your hair

Start braiding your hair from the left going towards the right and plait the remainder. You can either go for a Dutch braid or a French one, whatever style you prefer.

Step 5: Comb the remainder of your hair into position

Brush your hair up, making it ready to be pulled into a high puff or ponytail.

Step 6: Apply edge control

Use edge control to lock your hair in place – don’t forget to add some product at the back and behind the braid too! Once you’ve finished applying edge control, brush the product in going upwards all around your head.

Step 7: Tie your hair up

Smoothen your hair with your hands and tie up into a high puff using one or two hair bands. The number of hair bands to use will depend on the thickness of your hair. Add more edge control if necessary and brush the product in again this time using a bristle brush.
