If you dye your hair, whether at home or professionally, then after a little while you will start to get roots. While grown out hair dye can look pretty cool on some people (think ombre style!), it’s not for everyone. If your roots need a touch-up, and you can’t visit a salon, then L’Oréal Paris are here to help! Read on to get the complete lowdown on keeping your roots covered with some of their at-home tips!
First, put down the hair dye - the number one mistake that people make when attempting to touch up their roots is by recolouring the whole head. Layering colour on top of more colour will only result in hair becoming dull and flattening the texture of your locks, as well as unmatched colouring… no, thank you!
For a temporary fix to those roots peeking through, grab yourself a bottle of our L’Oréal Magic Retouch Instant Root Concealer Spray, voted the World’s Number One root concealer*, Magic Retouch’s pinpoint micro-diffuser precisely targets roots (and greys!) to provide perfectly blended coverage.
Find Your Shade
When it comes to choosing the right shade for you, opt for the shade slightly lighter than your natural colour, this will ensure that the finer hairs at the root blend correctly with your current lengths. Our Magic Retouch Spray comes in various shades of blondeand brunette, as well as black, so you can extend the life of your hair colour with ease and enjoy natural-looking colour, every single time.

How to Apply:
Begin by scraping your hair back tightly and hold the can around 13cm away from your hair before you begin to spray. Then loosen the hair and section off into quarters, and apply the spray directly on the roots, allowing the product to dry for one minute before touching or styling.
For best results, start with thin layers and build up the layers to get your desired look. Don’t go in too heavy-handed to start with, as you don’t want the colour looking too heavy.
Top Tip Alert!
Perhaps our fave tip for touching up roots is to go a shade lighter around the hairline, the baby hairs around your face are like fine facial hairs and therefore colour absorbs differently - opt for a lighter shade here to avoid the frame of your face looking too dark.
If you want a more precise finish, especially when tackling grey hairs along your hairline or temples, then why not try the L’Oréal Magic Retouch Concealer? The applicator is a handy wand shape so you can target smaller areas, but still enjoy brilliant coverage!
Avoid Direct Sunlight
It goes without saying that direct exposure to sunlight not only dries hair out drastically, it also speeds up the oxidation process. When coloured hair is exposed to UV rays, the heat can cause hair colour to fade faster, and this goes for root touch-ups too.
The result? perfectly blended colour that looks salon fresh.
Don’t forget caring for your hair between colourings is just as important to maintain salon-fresh locks. Find out how here with more top tips from L'Oreal Paris: The Best Products to Use Between Salon Visits.
