How to Wear Black Lipstick
Because black is a very striking and eye-grabbing colour, it is important that it is put on with precision. Equally, make sure you prep your lips before you start applying this dark and beautiful shade.
Step 1: Exfoliate
Using a soft toothbrush, or a lip scrub, gently exfoliate your lips to get rid of any dead skin or flakes.
Step 2: Moisturise
If your lips are dry and chapped, black lipstick will amplify the flaws. To avoid this, apply a small amount of lip balm or a generous dollop of moisturiser to your lips after exfoliating. Wait for your lips to absorb the moisture before lining the lips as this can cause the liner to slide.
Step 3: Line the Lip
To achieve the look, a precise line is key. Make sure your pencil is sharpened as a dull pencil may make the line too thick and unequal. If you don’t have a lip liner, you can use your trusty black eyeliner. Follow your natural lip line and fill in your lips afterwards.
Top Tip: Always line your lip following your natural lip line first. If you want to line outside it, your initial line will serve you as a guide.
Step 4: One More Layer
Add another layer of black either with your pencil or with the black lipstick. To make it easier and less likely for you to go outside of your original line, apply the lipstick with a brush.
Top Tip: Keep a cotton swab handy, just in case you make a mistake. Always correct if you make a small error – don’t be tempted to paint over it.
Step 5: A Glossy Finish – Optional
If you prefer a matte finish, this step is not for you. If you’d like to go for that impactful glossy finish, simply add a bit of lip gloss to the middle of your lips. Then simply purse your lips and spread the gloss.
Top Tip: Keep your lipstick or liner handy in your bag in case you need to reapply it throughout the day. Always remember, the darker the lipstick, the more visible the flaws, but thankfully it’s nothing that a simple pocket mirror and liner can’t fix.
What do I Wear Black Lipstick with?
Black lipstick is surprisingly versatile. If you are going to sport this coal colour as part of your day look, leave the rest of your makeup minimal. Pair it with relaxed knitwear and denim for a casual look and a slick of mascara with the classic little black dress for night.
