Red lipstick has a bad rep for being high maintenance (okay, it kinda is) but that doesn’t mean you can’t get it involved in your makeup routines. You just need to give it a little bit of time and attention. Here’s a quick guide to one of our fave daytime looks and how to make your lipstick last from morning ‘til night.
Prep Sista, Prep!
The key to a long-lasting makeup look is all in the prep. So, before we can get to adding an intense splash of colour to the lips, let’s take a look at the rest of the routine first.
Start off by thoroughly prepping your skin … you know what to do! Cleanse (double, if you have the time), treat your skin with a nourishing face oil and thoroughly moisturise. A cleansed complexion is a happy complexion!
Oh Hey, Gorgeous Skin
Nothing says natural, healthy complexion than a little brightness in the skin! So, apply a foundation that gives you that ‘just-applied’ look all day long. Lock this in place with a very light dusting of setting powder to eliminate excess shine and build in a touch of liquid blusher to your cheeks to give your complexion a naturally radiant appearance.

Eye, Eye!
This looks has subtle, yet cute, eyes so the lips can do all the talking. So, taking a fluffy eyeshadow brush, sweep a neutral coloured eyeshadow across your eyelids and into the crease. Then, to open up your eyes (and give you a hint of sparkle) apply several coats of black mascara to your top and lower lashes. Go on, give them a flutter!
If your brows are feeling a little left out, apply a clear brow gel through them all all-day-defined brows.

The Main Event: How to Apply Red Lipstick
Step 1: Scrub your lips
Start by removing any dry, flaky parts of your lips by gentle exfoliating them with a sugar scrub.
Step 2: Line your lips
If you ask a makeup artist how to ensure your lipstick lasts as long as possible, they will always tell you to line and fill your lips in first. Choose a lip liner that matches the colour of your lipstick you’re going to use and carefully draw around the outline of your lips and then fill them in using the same pencil. Not only will this increase the longevity of your red lip, but it will prevent the lipstick from bleeding out into your skin.

Step 3: Choosing the right shade of red
If you have tried red lipstick before but felt it wasn't for you, you may just be choosing the wrong shade. Selecting the perfect red is all about matching it to the undertones of your skin tone. Cooler, blue-based reds work better on fair skin (they also help your teeth look whiter) and yellow-based tones are more flattering for warmer skin.
Step 4: Build Up Colour
There are so many ways to wear a red lip, so if you tried one and it didn’t suit you it doesn’t mean you need to stop your search there! A red lip can come in a high gloss to a matte finish, so once you have selected the red that is for you carefully apply over the top of your lip liner for gorgeous, kissable lips!

Step 5: Blot and Seal
After you have applied a layer of colour, gentle press a tissue to your lips to ensure the colour is evenly distributed. Apply another layer and blot again for the final time. Then, using a brush, apply a translucent powder onto your lips through the tissue to set your colour in place.
Mwah, there you have it - perfect, long-lasting red lips perfect for everyday wear!
