When it comes to nostalgic beauty trends, nothing comes quite close to the 1990s! Makeup, hairstyles, and fashion were simply iconic. Who could forget the blue eyeshadow and super thin brows paired with crop tops, grungy jeans, and crimped hair? While we’re okay with the fact that some trends stayed in the ‘90s, there are definitely a few worth trying yourself today.
Come with us as we take a trip down memory lane and show you a simple way to recreate one of the most memorable hairstyles loved by A-listers and red-carpet regulars - semi cornrows. Our take on this cute look involves small twists instead of braiding, so it’s not too complicated, and anyone can give it a go!
Starting on one side of your head, part a 1-inch section of your hair using a tail comb. You can clip the rest of your hair to the side to keep it out of the way.
Step 2: Twist
Starting at your hairline, carefully twist your hair under and, with each rotation, and add more strands as you work your way towards the crown of your head.
Step 3: Secure
Once your twist ends halfway towards the crown of your head, stop and secure it with a hair grip - this will give your hair some height and volume. For an authentic 90s touch, you can then add a clear mini clip or a glittery butterfly clip for added nostalgia!
Step 4: Repeat
Once you have secured the first twist, you need to repeat the process over to the other side of your head. Keep parting, twisting, and securing until the loop is complete.
Step 5: Set in Place
To ensure your semi-cornrows stay in place, spray lightly with hairspray. This will give your hair some ‘grip’ and ensure your cute clips stay in place. If you have baby hair or flyaways, like our model, Regina, you can also use hairspray to tame them.
