Our eyes are always working, aside from when we are sleeping – they never really get a break! When they are overworked, they can become irritated quickly, leading to tired eyes and eyestrain. If this sounds all too familiar to you, here are some tell-tale symptoms to look out for and our top tips on how to relieve tired, achy eyes.
What Causes Tired Eyes?
Tired eyes can be caused by several activities but the most common include:
Too little sleep
Overexposure to blue light from digital screens
Working on a computer or laptop for too long
Poor lighting conditions
Driving a car for a prolonged time
Reading for too long
Basically, anything that requires you to use your eyes for an intense period (Netflix binging and Instagram scrolling included!)
What Are the Main Symptoms of Tired Eyes?
You may be experiencing tired eyes or eyestrain if you have any of the following symptoms:
Dry eyes
Redness
Blurry vision
Sensitivity to light
Puffiness or dark circles around the eyes
Watery eyes
Difficulty focusing
Pain in the neck, shoulders, and back
How Do You Relieve Tired Eyes?
If you spend a lot of time in front of the screen, don’t get enough sleep, or take on tasks for hours on end, then tired eyes may feel familiar to you. If that’s the case, here are some useful tips to help relieve tired eye symptoms:
1. Take regular screen breaks
It’s easy to be consumed by a screen, whether that’s your phone, TV, tablet or laptop, but it’s important to remember to rest your eyes.
We love the 20-20-20 rule and find it incredibly effective when having long, screen-filled days. Every twenty minutes, look away from your screen at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This little exercise should help your eyes relax for a little while.
This exercise also works well if you are reading or doing an activity, such as stitching or painting, which requires intense focus.
2. Get more sleep
It may sound simple (or even easier said than done), but waking up feeling refreshed in the morning is a great way to take the pressure off your eyes.
If eyedrops are not for you, you can help hydrate the eye area with an eye spray, such as Optrex Actimist Dry & Tired Eye Spray, for an instant feeling of freshness.
4. Make sure your room is evenly lit
If you’re spending hours in a room where the lighting is too dark or too bright, you are going to be putting more pressure on your vision leading to eye strain. Ensure you have an optimal level of light throughout your home or place of work to give your eyes a rest.
5. Check your prescription is up to date
If you wear glasses or contact lenses and your eyes are irritated and feel strained, your prescription may need updating. Even if you have seen an optician within the last two years, vision can change over time, and a prescription that worked for you in the past may no longer be the case.
Or, if you do not currently wear glasses or contacts, tired eyes could be a sign that you need them now!
Book an appointment with your local optician to discuss your symptoms and find out more.
