It’s a sobering statistic but worldwide only 60% of people with HIV know their status. Left untreated, the virus reduces the number of T cells in the body, which damages the immune system, making it harder to shake off a whole host of diseases.
Seven out of 10 people in the UK are living with HIV, so it’s important that the most at-risk groups – men who have sex with men and black African men and women – get tested.
National HIV Testing Week raises awareness, encouraging these groups – and others at risk – to get tested regularly, whether through a GP, at a pharmacy or in the comfort of their own home.
So if you’re putting off getting tested because you’re worried the appointment is going to take hours, or you don’t want to wait a week for your results, there’s some good news. The new BioSURE HIV Self Test Kit is designed for home testing and is quick, accurate and easy.
It requires just 2.5 microlitres of blood and comes with a premeasured and premixed buffer solution for speedy testing. Results are available in just 15 minutes and are 99.7% accurate. Help spread the word!
HIV Testing Week starts on Saturday, 17 November. The BioSURE HIV Self Test Kit, £33.95, is available online at Superdrug.com.
