What Does the Pneumonia Vaccine Protect Against?
The pneumonia vaccination helps protect you against pneumococcal infections, caused by the bacterium Streptococcus Pneumonia, which ranges from making you very unwell to being potentially fatal.
Potential Infections Include:
Pneumonia: Pneumonia causes inflammation in either one or two lungs and comes with a range of unpleasant symptoms including difficulty to breathe, a mucus cough, a fast-paced heartbeat, sweating, shivering and feeling very poorly. Pneumonia is more common in high-risk groups (more on that in a bit), but it is not known to be inclusive and can affect anyone.
Ear Infections: Ear infections are uncomfortable, painful, and all-round unpleasant! They can cause severe pain in and around the ear, make your temperature soar to over 38C, strip you of all your energy, and leave your ear feeling itchy and sensitive.
Meningitis: Meningitis is an infection of the protective membrane that surrounds both the brain and spinal cord. It can be incredibly serious, and symptoms can come on rapidly including vomiting, a high temperature, sensitivity to bright lights, a rash (not always), a headache and being unresponsive.
Septicaemia: This is a type of blood poisoning that is caused by a potentially life-threatening amount of bacterium entering the bloodstream.
Sinusitis – This is an infection of the sinus area, which is most common after someone has had a cold or the flu. Symptoms can last for a few weeks and could include a reduction in smell, a high temperature, and swollen sinuses.
Superdrug’s Pneumonia Vaccination Service FAQs
Q: When can I get the vaccination?
A: Our Pneumonia Vaccination Service is available all year round. However, the infection is more common in the colder months, so we would especially encourage people to book an appointment during the winter to keep on top of their wellness.
Q: Who can have the vaccine?
A: The vaccine is available to anyone over the age of two through Superdrug Health Clinics.
The vaccine is also available via the NHS for free; however, only those in a high-risk group which include babies under 2, adults over the age of 65, and people with long-term health conditions are eligible.
Q: How much does the vaccine cost?
A: There are two types of vaccinations available via our service, and the nurse will advise you which one is best suited to you. The vaccine cost between £30 and £70, depending on your dose.
Q: How does the vaccine work?
A: The vaccine is injected into the upper arm and works by encouraging your body to produce antibodies to fight the pneumococcal bacterium. It is estimated, by the NHS, that the vaccine is between 50 and 70% effective.
Q: Are there any side effects?
A: You may experience mild side effects such as tiredness, a high temperature, and redness or swelling around the injection site. However, you should not experience any symptoms of a pneumococcal infection as the vaccine does not contain any live bacteria.
