Masturbation is self Celebration

A warm opening from Superdrug’s Resident Sex & Relationships Educator, Alix Fox

Superdrug’s Resident Sex & Relationships Educator, Alix FoxHello wondrous human beings. Welcome to a zine that peels back the covers on a touchy subject – literally...

We’re here to get frank, up front and hands on about masturbation. It’s something that most people do, and that can be both physically and emotionally beneficial in a whole host of ways, yet our recent survey discovered that less than a fifth of us feel comfy talking about it.

But here at Superdrug, we’ve never shied away from tackling health and body stuff that might seem embarrassing, taboo, icky or squicky.

Whether it’s problems with erections (we’ve got the largest range of help on the high street); testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (we were the first folks to offer HIV self-test kits in store); orbeing open and honest about mental health challenges (this year we’ve partnered with My Online Therapy to help more people easily access support), we pride ourselves on speaking up and reaching out, so that as many people as possible from all different walks of life feel able to join our constructive conversations.

Why? Because allowing such topics to remain shrouded in stigma, shame and secrecy helps no-one, and can even cause harm. Allowing misinformation, myths and mysteries about wellbeing and health to be perpetuated is never what we’re about. We believe people should feel free to ask questions; be able to get reliable info; and have access to products and resources that will help them get as much joy from living inside their brilliant bodies as possible!

Masturbation allows you to please yourself, by yourself, for yourself. It’s natural, it’s good for you, and even if you choose to do it in the dark, we think that discussions about it need to step out from the shadows.

So, we’ve launched a campaign that I’m proud to have named: Masturbation as Self-Celebration. It’s all about empowering you to discover new ways to make yourself feel fabulous. To feel confident and comfortable about allowing yourself to savour those glorious sensations. And to feel greater gratitude for and pride in the body that’s delivering them to you. You’re amazing, and you deserve to feel unashamedly amazing too. There’s a party in your pants... and you’re invited!

We’ve enlisted a host of experts – from doctors to activists to sex toy entrepreneurs, and with a variety of sexualities, gender identities and cultural backgrounds - to lend their voices to this zine, where they share thoughts, tips and truths about self-pleasure.

Right – let’s get busy, shall we? Alix @AlixFox

  • #LADIESLETSLUBE

Durex’s #ladiesletslube campaignDurex’s #ladiesletslube campaign is educating women on sexual discomfort, in the hopes of changing the way we talk about sex so we can start to put our sexual pleasure first.

How wet we get changes with our cycle. In fact, for 2/3’s of our cycle women are not optimally lubricated which can result in discomfort.

Sexual discomfort can have both physical and emotional effects - so why are we still putting up with it?

Durex’s Natural’s lubes have a gentle, pH-friendly formula with 100% natural ingredients which can help make masturbation and sex a smoother, more pleasurable experience.

For those totally normal drier days, it’s totally natural to reach for lube.

Remember ladies… It’s not rude to lube!

  • YOU SHOULD GO AND LOVE YOURSELF

YOU SHOULD GO AND LOVE YOURSELFAlix Fox and Woowoo share tips on how you can use self-pleasure to improve your self-esteem, self-image and self-confidence

It’s a fact: getting fappy can make you happy! There are lots of physical and mental benefits to masturbation: the feel-good chemicals that sensual pleasure and orgasm release into your system can help to aid restful sleep, relieve stress, and even ease period pain. But it’s also hands down (...your pants, obviously) one of the best ways to feel better about the skin you’re in. Acknowledging the power your body has in making you feel fantastic can make it easier to feel fantastic about your body.

Here are a handful of exercises that use solo sex to help you become a better bud with your bod:

START THE MAGIC WITH SOME FOCUS HOCUS POCUS: In X-rated media, people are often described as masturbating “furiously” (why so angry?!) or “vigorously”, but self-love can be slow, laidback & gentle…and it doesn’t have to focus solely on the genitals. Try beginning a session by using a fingertip to lightly trace the lines on the palm of your hand, as though reading your fortune, then stroking the insides of your wrists, your collarbones, and the super-soft skin around your earlobes. Pay attention to the subtle, tingly tickles. Honing your ability to ‘tune in’ to even the most understated nice feelings like this is called ‘sensate focus’. It’s an exercise commonly recommended by sex therapists that helps you enhance your sensitivity, and appreciate your whole body’s potential to feel delicious.

OIL BE THERE FOR YOU: Next, add a few drops of gorgeous geranium-scented Woowoo Bliss Oil [WE COULD PUT AN ARROW HERE SAYING ‘CULT PRODUCT ALERT’, OR SIMILAR], and spend a moment giving yourself a hand massage – there are lots of fab free tutorials on YouTube (and it feels especially pampering if you’ve been working from home typing all day). This helps you relax; gives you chance to start getting in the mood; and underlines the fact that you don’t have to make a beeline straight for your bits! This is also extra helpful for anyone with any emotional blocks or trauma that mean masturbation can feel intimidating or is something they need to ease into carefully. If you need some inspiration to help fuel your sexual fantasies and fire up your libido, try experimenting with audio erotica, such as DipseaStories.com: a female-founded app that lets you play saucy stories read aloud by actors. You can select from categories such as “romantic”, “hot hookups” or “queer stories” depending on your tastes and sexuality. Listen on noise-cancelling headphones to really lose yourself in the tales (& prevent your fam or your flatmates from overhearing!).

TRY SOME SELF-REFLECTION: When you’re ready, let your silky-slick fingers explore your neck, your nipples, your nethers... Whatever feels right IS right. You do you – literally! Consider touching yourself in front of a mirror: getting comfy with how you look while you’re enjoying yourself creates positive connections in your mind between your appearance and contentment. Becoming familiar with how your private parts look also means you’re more likely to spot any changes that might indicate health issues, too – getting to know your down-belows helps you monitor your wellbeing.

ALL FUR ONE AND ONE FUR ALL: Woowoo recently reformulated Tame It! - their hit intimate hair removal cream – in order to remove the silk proteins it used to contain, meaning the whole range is now vegan, and you can look after the animals while you – ahem – pet your kitty! Pubic hair removal is a personal choice: some people do it not just for aesthetics, but because they find being bare down there enhances the intensity of how it feels when they stroke themselves, so giving yourself a ‘smooth groove’ might be something you wish to try out. If you’re prone to ingrowing hairs, Tame It! may well be a better bet for experimenting than shaving or waxing.

BECOME A WRAP STAR: If you’re a penis-owning person, using condoms during masturbation is the perfect opportunity to become a pro at putting them on; get used to the sensation of wearing one so it doesn’t feel odd or distracting during partnered sex; and work out what style and size suits you best. A Woowoo Protect It! Party pack is a great place to start, as it contains three different types. Get condom confident.

Sexual pleasure is the most gendered and heteronormative area of discussion. So much of this has to do with language and dialogue and the way we have been taught to even think about female pleasure.

We have no language for sexual pleasure in my culture. I don’t know what masturbation is in Hindi, I don’t know what vagina is in Hindi. Because sex is such a massive taboo.
