Product Information
Canesten oral and cream duo is a combination treatment consisting of a capsule and cream for the treatment of vaginal or penile thrush.
This is a Pharmacy Medicine item. We will ask you to complete a questionnaire to ensure this is appropriate for you which our pharmacist will check.
Features
- Single light blue capsule with Canesten printed on it in black between two black lines. Tube contains white cream.
Benefit
The capsule contains Fluconazole which treats thrush at the site of the infection. The cream contains Clotrimazole which is used to relieve local soreness and itching.
Warning or Restrictions
- Please consult your doctor before using if you are aged under 16 or over 60.
- Do not take the capsule if you are or think you maybe pregnant.
- As with other creams, this product may reduce the effectiveness of rubber contraceptives, such as condoms or diaphragms. As a result, please use alternative protection for at least five days after using this product.
- Avoid sexual intercourse whilst you have thrush and are using this product as your partner may become infected.
- If you have more than two infections within six months you will need to see your doctor.
- The capsule contains lactulose monohydrate. If you have been previously told by your doctor that you are intolerant to some sugars, seek medical advice prior to taking this medicine.
- Please consult your pharmacist or doctor before using this medicine if you are currently pregnant, likely to get pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Please consult your pharmacist or doctor if you are currently taking any other medicines as this may cause an interaction.

Product Specification
Capsule
Active ingredient: Fluconazole 150mg. Other ingredients: colloidal silicon dioxide, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, maize starch and sodium lauryl sulphate. The capsule shell contains brilliant blue FCF, (E133), titanium dioxide (E171) and gelatine. The printing ink contains shellac, black iron oxide (E172) and propylene glycol.
Cream
Active ingredient: clotrimazole 2% w/w. Other ingredients: benzyl alcohol, polysorbate 60, sorbitan stearate, cetyl palmitate, cetostearyl alcohol, octyldodecanol and purified water.

Product Uses
Capsule: Swallow whole with a glass of water with or without food.
Cream:
- For vaginal thrush: apply thinly and evenly around the entrance of the vagina 2 to 3 times daily for one week or until symptoms disappear.
- For penile thrush: apply thinly and evenly at the end of the penis 2 to 3 times daily for up to 2 weeks or until symptoms disappear.
Tips and Advice
To avoid further episodes:
- Wear cotton knickers and loose clothing.
- Wash daily.
- After using the toilet, wipe from the front to the back to prevent the thrush infection from spreading from the bowel.
- Change your sanitary protection regularly.
- Avoid wearing tights, nylon knickers, and close fitting jeans.
- Try to avoid washing with perfume soaps or using vaginal deodorants.
- Do not scrub the area hard with sponges or flannels and avoid hot baths with strong perfumed oils.
